TMS Q&A

What is TMS?

TMS, also called transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a procedure that uses magnetic energy to stimulate cells in your brain to reduce major depression. TMS is a painless, noninvasive treatment that offers dramatic results for your mental health. If depression is dragging you down and other treatments haven’t worked, consider TMS at DuPage Psychiatric Care PLLC.

What is TMS used for?

TMS is a common treatment for depression, particularly when you haven’t found relief with other treatments. This therapy can also treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraines, and smoking addictions. You might undergo TMS with other mental health treatments to ensure effective results. The DuPage Psychiatric Care PLLC team is highly trained in TMS therapy.

Is TMS right for me?

To determine if you’re a candidate for TMS, your DuPage Psychiatric Care PLLC provider completes a mental health evaluation. They inquire about your mental health history, symptoms, lifestyle, and prior treatments before personalizing a mental health treatment plan.

What happens during TMS treatments?

During TMS treatment, the DuPage Psychiatric Care PLLC experts place an electromagnetic coil on your scalp. The coil delivers magnetic energy into your brain cells in regions responsible for mood control. Though the treatment isn’t painful, you can expect to hear tapping or clicking sounds.

Each treatment session may last about 20 minutes, but treatment times vary from person to person. Your DuPage Psychiatric Care PLLC provider determines how often to schedule TMS treatments to achieve the best results.

What can I expect after TMS treatment sessions?

After TMS treatments, you can resume a typical routine since there’s no downtime needed. You might be a candidate for daily treatment, five times weekly, for a period of 4-6 weeks.

After you complete all TMS treatment sessions, your mental health specialist re-evaluates your mood, thoughts, and behaviors to determine if the treatment was effective.

You might also undergo psychotherapy weekly to maximize the results of TMS therapy. Additional treatment options for depression include oral medications, intravenous (IV) ketamine therapy, Spravato® nasal spray, and lifestyle-change counseling.
